DIN L-ART ĦELWA PRESS RELEASE

Delimara Lighthouse Tours Saturday 10 May

Volunteers of Din l-Art Ħelwa will be opening the historic lighthouse at Delimara to the public on Saturday 10th May at 2 pm.  Guided tours will be given by Din l-Art Ħelwa Council Member Stanley Farrugia Randon at 2 pm, 3 pm and 4 pm during which the history of the lighthouse and of its unique Fresnel lense will be illustrated.  As access to the lantern tower is restricted, visuals will be available as well as a model of the tower for a sensory experience for those visually or physically disadvantaged. Participation is free of charge but donations towards the upkeep of the lighthouse will be gladly accepted.

The lighthouse, an important piece of maritime industrial heritage, was completed in 1855 by Governor Sir Richard More O’Ferrall  to guide ships coming from North Africa safely into Valletta in view of the opening of the Suez Canal.  It is now managed by Din l-Art Ħelwa, National Trust for Malta and its exterior walls have recently been restored.

The restoration of the lighthouse by Din l-Art Ħelwa,  was made possible by a LEADER programme grant for Restoration of Assets of Artistic and Cultural Assets through the Xlokk Local Action Group Foundation as part of the European Agricultural fund for Rural Development 2014-2020, and by the Co-Financing Fund for NGOs of the Malta Council for the Voluntary Sector and the Ministry for Inclusion and the Voluntary Sector.
