Next in the autumn series of cultural presentations organized by Din l-Art Helwa is a presentation by Martina Caruana on Thursday February 12th, covering educational programmes in Malta for conservation and restoration.

The presentation will take a look at the Cultural Heritage Act in terms of the citizens’ and institutions’ obligations in relation to the preservation of cultural heritage and will provide an overview of educational initiatives in Malta aimed at helping to preserve our cultural heritage. The presentation will also focus on the professional figure of the conservator-restorer and will expand on education in Malta leading to the development of this profession in the context of European trends in the field and within the context of the European Qualifications Framework.

Martina Caruana is a graduate in Music and History of Art, specializing in the latter, particularly in the field of manuscript illumination. Upon obtaining her PhD in the subject from the Sorbonne Paris IV in 2000 she was employed with the Malta Centre for Restoration and has since been working in the field of education in relation to conservation and management of cultural heritage. She has led an EU project on the creation of standards in conservation education and has also published on the subject. She currently occupies the post of Chief Officer, Institute of Conservation and Management of Cultural Heritage, and Conservation Division within Heritage Malta.

The lecture will take place at the Judge Caruana Curran Hall, at Din L-Art Helwa, 133 Melita Street, Valletta and will start at 6 p.m.. Those wishing to participate are advised to be seated by 5.45.
