Press Release 23 May 2009 – Din l-Art Helwa and Nature Trust

Environmental NGOs Din l-Art Helwa and Nature Trust (Malta) insist that Enemalta ensures that the proposed extension of the Delimara power station complies with current EU Directives concerning pollution prevention and control. The NGOs remind the authorities of Malta’s obligation to reduce CO2 emissions by 10% by the year 2020. This means that any new investments in energy technology should aim for such reductions. This will not only ensure that Malta reaches its obligations as an EU member state, but will also improve the air quality of the Maltese Islands.

The generating plant chosen should be converted to operate using gas as fuel, instead of diesel or heavy fuel oil, as soon as this option is available. The NGOs also request that the Malta Environment and Planning Authority guarantees that adequate monitoring of emissions is carried out at all stages, and that this data is made available to the public
