Press Release – 21 August 2015

Din l-Art Helwa welcomes the news that the new American University of Malta will be partly sited in the former sailmaker’s lofts at Dock No. 1, Cospicua; an existing building which is crying out for restoration. The sensitive re-use and conservation of historic buildings is certainly the way forward as a means of preserving the unique architecture of the country and limiting the uptake of land and open spaces.

It is unacceptable, however, that the Government is still going to encroach on an ODZ area at Zonqor Point in Marsascala, when it should be the one to lead by example. The re-location of the water polo pitch along the foreshore at Marsascala will also encroach on the present swimming zone, and must be studied to create the least possible impact on the area.
