PROTEST MARCH IN FAVOUR OF THE ENVIRONMENT: SATURDAY 30 NOVEMBER 10.30 AM, CITY GATE, VALLETTA

Din l-Art Helwa is highly concerned about the many new planning laws to be launched by Government that are set to relax building restrictions in a number of ways and all at the same time.  Since the shameful approval of the Mistra Ridge development, so many people from all corners of Malta have asked us to take public action and express common indignation for this decision which spans two governments.  Together with the eleven other organisations listed below this email and several residents’ associations, a public rally has been organised for Saturday November 30 at 10.30 a.m to ask Government to protect the citizen’s right of enjoyment of our environment.  More details are in the Press Release we have issued which is attached above, and in a full page advert which together with the other groups will appear in the printed media tomorrow.

We shall rally outside City Gate at 10.15 where we have organised placards and streamers. Look for the DLH placards.  500 copies of ‘Tniggis u Sahha’ will be distributed.  This is written by DLH council member, Dr Stanley Farrugia Randon, links pollution and health in an attractive pamphlet and is directed at young families.  We will need your help to give these out.  We hope you all turn out in full force to support this important stand which must bring government to its senses and take full responsibility for the promises it made in its 2013 Electoral manifesto which states:

“Malta should be in the vanguard on environmental standards, not because there is an obligation placed upon us by European directives but because this is what best suits our children and generations to come’.

Despite this strong undertaking pledged by the new government, the NGOs maintain that within the last eight months the only commitment shown by the authorities has been to further the interests of the development lobby.

Please do circulate this note to your families and friends and rally as many as people as possible and keep Saturday 30th a.m. free for this Public Protest in favour of the Environment.

We need all the support we can get, and will send out a reminder mid week.  In the meantime, remember: ‘The job of a good citizens is to keep their mouth open’.

Regards and have a good healthy weekend.
