The Malta Independent on Sunday, 6 June 2010 –
The Majjistral Nature and History Park Board together with the Heritage Parks Federation, made up of Din l-Art Ħelwa, the Gaia Foundation and Nature Trust (Malta) – managers of the park – said in a statement yesterday they condemn the recent attacks by vandals, who this time targeted at least three corbelled stone huts (giren) at ix-Xagħra l-Ħamra.
These old rural structures form part of the rural heritage of Malta and are especially abundant in this area with more than 30 inside the park itself.
This is not the first time that vandals have targeted the park – apart from the incessant littering and dumping, various interpretation signs were destroyed as soon as they were put up last year.
The board and the park’s management calls upon the public to report any suspicious activities to the police so as to help it in its endeavours to protect this National Park located in Mellieħa to be enjoyed by all.
A similar condemnation came from the Mellieha local council.
