Ġenna ta’ Ġonna – Din l-Art Ħelwa participates to Floriana Council’s initiative by opening the Msida Bastion Garden of Rest

Ġenna ta’ Ġonna” at Floriana
Sunday 15th October 2017
9.00a.m to 5.00p.m

With its gardens Floriana is indeed a ‘Heaven of Gardens’, in the densely built Grand Harbour Region. And yet, Floriana has so much more to offer. Floriana is dotted with historic buildings, churches and the largest amount of monuments of national importance on the island.

This year marks the seventh edition of ‘Ġenna ta’Ġonna’, precisely on Sunday 15th October 2017, from 9.00a.m till 5.00p.m. In collaboration with a number of entities, Floriana will throw open its gardens, museums, historical sites & buildings.

A good number of these sites and buildings are not usually accessible to the public, while gardens like the Sa Maison Garden and St Philip’s Garden lie hidden and undiscovered between the thick bastion walls.

Among this year’s attraction there are original documents dating the Knights’ period, kept at the Capuchin’s Friars Library, mummified friars in the same convent, Malta’s only  Underground Train Station, a chance to go up Floriana’s Parish Church roof and belfry and access to the scaffolding for a close view of the works in progress of the church ceiling decoration project by artist John Grima, a Police Dog Show, the Msida Bastion Historic Garden, access to WWII emergency operating theatre, the newly restored Wignacourt Water Tower, the Chapel and Refectory at the Bishop’s Curia,  Vintage Cars Show, activities & exhibitions, and entertainment at the Valletta Waterfront.

A vintage bus will be available to tour the public around Floriana’s heritage. A guide on the bus will be informing the public of the particular heritage of the area.

Moreover, booklets of ‘Floriana Heritage Trail’ (a booklet to walk you through Floriana’s heritage) will be distributed free to the public.

Floriana Local Council has long felt the need to defy the common perception that Floriana is all about il-Fosos (the Granaries) and Triq Sant’ Anna  (St. Anne Street). Floriana has yet to be discovered what a gem of a town Floriana really is!
